Phones, Phones, Phones!

The cell phone (also known as the mobile phone) has changed a lot over the last 20 to 30 years. Like other pieces of technology, it has progressed a lot. From the “brick” phones of the 1980s, to the slimmer phones of the 1990s, the flip phones of the early 2000s, the phones with keyboards from the late 2000s, to modern day smartphones. Mobile phones went from the thickness of a tissue box to the thickness of a pencil. It’s an item some people take for granted and an item some people (especially those my age) can’t live without. The weird thing is that the modern smartphone came out only 10 years ago.

The mobile phone allows us to stay connected to our friends and family all the time. You can take pictures, take videos, browse the internet, play hundreds of games, and so on. The downside is that cell phones, in many cases, limit our physical communication with others. In addition, some get so attached to their phones that they do stupid things like texting while driving. I suppose it is your opinion as to whether mobile phones have benefited or hurt society.

On the personal side, I remember the first phone I ever had was a $10 dollar prepaid Tracfone. It only did calling and texting, but it was all I needed. Nowadays, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which was given to me from my brother. It was a little hard to use at first, but I got the hang of it. Apart from poor battery life (that’s because the phone is huge with a 5.7 inch screen), it’s a great phone and has more features than I can possibly imagine. As for the rest of my family, my brother changes smartphones every 6 months. He sells phones for a living, so he’s pretty much an expert. He helped my mom switch from using flip phones to iPhones and also persuaded my dad to get his first phone less than 2 years ago. So yeah, there’s my family’s history with mobile phones.

So, what’s your history with cell phones? Do you own a smartphone now, an older one, or nothing? Do you prefer Apple’s operating system or Android’s system? Suppose you can also consider this an open thread.
