So yesterday I posted a quote from one of the Touched by an Angel shows which I had shared in comments to Heather. Something the character Monica said “Why is it that when you talk to God, you’re praying, but when God talks to you, you’re nuts?”
I know a couple of us mentioned that God talks to us (and we don’t mind being considered nuts lol), but I think when we say that God ‘says’ or God “told me’, that’s when non believers or seekers get confused because they have an image of an audible voice, which in our society is akin to schizophrenia or some other condition.
I for one have never had a ‘burning bush’ moment where I hear God’s voice audibly. Nor out of a ‘whirlwind’ as He spoke to Job and his friends. I’ve never heard His voice coming from the clouds as did those who were present at the baptism of Jesus or on the mount during the Transfiguration. But there are many ways God speaks to us who know His voice…
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
While not everyone who has heard God’s voice knew for sure it was Him speaking (Samuel and Gideon for example) we can know His voice through the Bible which is the inspired Word of God. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” 2 Tim 3:16,17
If we have problems or questions in our lives, we can trust that as Titus 1:2 says, that God cannot lie. The more time we spend earnestly with God and His Word, the easier it is to recognize His voice.
So, can God speak audibly? Yes- although He primarily uses His written Word, but also through the Holy Spirit which communicates through our conscience, other people’s persuasions and through circumstances which, like me, I have experienced plenty of times. Sometimes when I have something weighing on my heart and heavy on my mind, I often hear a message on that exact problem either from my pastor’s sermon or happen to find something similar while listening to the radio.
The main thing is to be discerning, to know for sure if it’s really God you’re ‘hearing’, and the way to do that is to know the written Word and compare. How often have people followed after lying spirits because they didn’t understand or know the Bible.
This is just a quick and to the point crash course on a subject that alot of people either take too seriously (by making it into some fantastical, hocus pocus driven, spiritually wild essay) or not seriously enough- as in those who think we’re just a bunch of nuts. I’m sure though others have ways in which God has spoken to them in a real, powerful if not audible way- and it’d be interesting to hear some examples.
I hope though that this might help anyone out there who has wondered about it.
I hope everyone has a blessed and safe Monday and week.
