OK I admit, yesterday’s post was one of my notorious long ones, so I’ll give folks a breather today and keep this one short, even though it’s not so simple a message.
Many people, even Christians have a hard time understanding the whole idea of a Triune God, and those of Judaism and even Islam consider it blaspheme to believe in ‘Three’ Gods. But is it three Gods we believe in? No.
It is important we understand what the trinity is though, and that part of the reasons why the religious leaders of the day wanted Jesus to die for blaspheme for claiming to be God (which we’ll go into more detail on Thursday).
While the Bible doesn’t use the words trinity or triune, it is explicit in it’s revelation of the trinity, but one has to read and re read with guidance of the Holy Spirit to understand.
There is evidence of the Persons of God in the very beginning in Genesis, where the Hebrew word Elohim which is singular, yet is used in plural form. Both Old and New Testaments point to a unique Godhead, that is a unity of three Persons in One God.
For many people, the whole idea of the trinity is so confusing- as it was to me too. Just because it’s a bit confusing for our mortal minds to get a handle on, does not mean that it’s a doctrine of demons as so many claim.
This is a very poor example, but the closest thing I can think of to explain it. I am one person. I am Carolyn. But- I am Carolyn the daughter, Carolyn the Mom and Me, Carolyn. I have three main natures or “personhoods” but am one person. Does that make sense? It is much the same, only way huge, in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. There is only One Almighty God, but there are three natures or “personhoods” in Him. Some people have used H2O as an example; as frozen ice, liquid water or in gas form, water comes in three ways, yet still remains H2O.
If you read the account of Jesus when He is Baptized, you see the triune nature so beautifully illustrated. When John Baptizes Jesus, and Jesus rises out of the water, the Spirit of God came in the form of a dove and rested on His shoulder- then a voice came out of the clouds and said, “this is My Son, and with Him I am well pleased”. God the Spirit, God the Son and God the Father all in one scene if you will. There are many passages like this throughout the Bible.
God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit
And God said, Let Us make man in our image, after our likenessGenesis 1:26 (a)
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.Genesis 11:7
And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straight away out of the water: and lo,the heavens were opened unto him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Matthew 3:16,17
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name_ of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Ghost.Matthew 28:19
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but it is the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.1 Corinthians 12:4-7
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all. Amen.2 Corinthians 13:14
For there are three that bear record in heaven, The Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one.1 John 5:7
Each of these verses of Scripture shows a reflection of the Triune nature of God. Since Bible believing Christians agree there is only One God- but He is 3 persons in Himself, dose this mean that God is confusing, therefore contradicting the Scripture verse that says, God is not the author of confusion?
Not at all! God is not desiring that we be confused or afraid, but wants us to trust Him with what wisdom and knowledge He sees fit to give us. The idea or doctrine of the Trinity is not confusion- but something our finite minds can’t quite grasp. Just as we trust that the Word is true when it declares that creation brought order to chaos is a mystery to us, so is it that God is a loving Father, a sacrificial Son and comfort and wisdom of His Holy Spirit! God is Awesome and too huge for my small mind to conceive!
There will be more on this subject coming up on Thursday as we look at the claim that Jesus is God the son….
Have a blessed day all!
