“Never in my life did I dream of having a large family, but God had different plans and so here we are. And I’m loving it all.”
Those words were spoken by Oklahoma Police Officer Jody Thompson earlier this week, as the amazing story broke about he was given a special certificate award for going above and beyond his duty.
Two years ago, Officer Thompson responded to a call that would change not only his life, but the lives of the boy he rescued from unimaginable abuse and the boy’s unborn sister.
When Officer Thompson got to the home where child abuse was suspected, the 9 year old boy John was found with his hands and feet tied with rope and had been submerged in a trash can held in the shower. He had bruises and cuts all over his body. He was also underweight, weighing just 61 pounds.
Thompson immediately wrapped him in a blanket and took John to the Oklahoma Children’s Advocacy center so that his injuries could be photographed before taking him to the hospital.
Thompson stayed with John at the hospital, and knew he couldn’t leave the boy. He applied to be a foster parent and the Thompson family brought John home a few days later.
While this would make a sweet story as it is, it only gets better, as John’s mother delivered his baby sister while in jail awaiting trial and the Thompson’s were granted approval to foster her as well . The parents relinquished their parental rights, and Officer Thompson became John’s dad for real as the adoption went through.
It takes a lot of heart to help people by being a cop, but it sure takes a huge heart to do what Officer Thompson did, which was rightfully officially honored this week with a certificate of commendation from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations.
It’s Friday which means I hope everyone will join me in wearing Red, to Remember Everyone Deployed. But if your red is all in the wash, then Blue will do- to honor our Leos. God bless all, and be safe.
