For Those Who Serve

by lawngren

If it seems good to anyone to repost this elsewhere, by all means do so. Like any patriotic American would, I hope that all our warriors, LEOs, firefighters, and paramedics will read this.

To all our military, law enforcement, firefighters, and paramedics: those of us who are really Americans, in our hearts and minds, hate to hear of your suffering. It grieves us deeply to hear that our vets especially are committing suicide. But we can’t be with most of you. Those of us who are Christians can and do pray for you, but you need more than the prayers of far-off strangers.

I know a way out of hell.

It’s hard to believe when you’ve been through extreme terror and pain and seen evil triumphant, but the God of the Bible is real. If your soul has been seared, burned, charred, by what you’ve seen and suffered, you may be angry at God. You may hate Him. You may coldly dismiss from your mind any thought of a just and loving God. But you should know that He doesn’t hate you back. He has the ability to ease your pain, and in the next life if not this one, to completely heal it.

God does not shield Himself from our agonies. Jesus, God’s uniquely-born son, left His throne in Heaven to take on a human body and suffer with us – “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”

Tempted? Did not sin? There’s a lot more to it than that.

Military and law enforcement and firefighters should understand this in their bones. “You never leave your partner.” “Never shall I fail my comrades.” Jesus did not abandon us to this present misery and evil and death. He let Himself be interrogated by evil enemies and tortured to death rather than lose the only chance to open Heaven’s gates for us.

King Jesus did not fail us. He did not break. His enemies beat Him. They drove a “crown” made of thorns down into His scalp. They kept Him awake all night and mocked Him and spat on Him. They whipped Him until His back looked like raw hamburger.

And then they crucified Him. They drove nails like rounded railroad spikes into His wrists against the carpal tunnel nerve, and one spike through both feet. They lifted the cross up and let it fall to the bottom of the support socket, creating a sudden impact against the spikes. Through all of this, He did not break. In fact, one of the last things He said as He hung by the spikes on that cross was, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.”

Do you know whom He was speaking about when He said that? He was NOT talking about the Jewish priests, the power-brokers. They knew perfectly well that He was the predicted Messiah, and they had arranged and demanded His death anyway.

Jesus was speaking about the Roman soldiers who had crucified Him and were at that moment gambling for the only valuable thing He owned, His cloak.

You hear me, soldier? God knows you inside and out, and He still loves you. You, as you really are, not your mother’s image of you as her perfect son. Not as some romantic chick or civilian patriot sees you. No, God sees the seeds of evil that are in even your heart, sees everything you’ve ever done or thought, and He. Loves. You. Any. Way.

He also knows your pain and your desire for righteousness to triumph.

You hate the destruction and death of war? You are boiling over with rage at the unspeakably evil things your enemy has done? Your heart is torn by a child’s death, a child you fought with everything you had to save? The memory of the flames that consumed everything a family owned, or burned them to death, will not leave your mind? Then you should apply for citizenship in Heaven because NONE of those things will be allowed to enter Heaven.

Here’s a description of what you have to look forward to if you are or become a believer in King Jesus. These are excerpts from Revelation chapter 21:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s residence is now among the people, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away’ … He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down! These words are trustworthy and true!’

He said to me: ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idol-worshipers and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.‘ ”

Those who are victorious” – that’s not a military term here. It relates to another Scripture: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1st John 5:3-5)

There it is, all wrapped up right there waiting for you to make it yours. This evil world will end, evil people will be consigned to hell, and those who have accepted the fact that they need to be re-born and have placed their faith in Jesus to make it so – they will be the ones who will populate the new earth and the new heavens.

There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” … “the old order of things has passed away” … “To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life” …  Do those promises call to your heart? They are yours for the asking, if you believe that God raised Jesus from the dead.

King Jesus went through hell, literally after His death, as well suffering hellish torment in His crucifixion, to save you from torment and despair in this life and the next. To give you a new life, a new world, a new hope. Don’t let it be a waste. Don’t throw it away. Don’t turn away. You’re not a follower, a sheeple. You are what you are because you take the initiative. You lead. You struggle for what is good and right.

This time, do yourself the same favor you have done for others: accept what Someone else has done for you.
