In the Spotlight

Today’s spot light shines on a musician I’ve liked for a long time, ever since I first  heard his song More.

Matthew West wanted to be a professional baseball player- but God obviously had other plans when he was offered a four-year music scholarship to Millikan University.  Imagine if his desires had won out, and millions of people would never be touched by the powerful messages in his hits such as Grace Wins, Hello- My Name is, and so many more songs that have impacted so many and drawn us to the love of God.

West wrote most of his first songs in the sanctuary of his father’s church during breaks from college. After he graduated, a friend suggested that Matthew attend the annual  Gospel Music Association Music in the Rockies event for aspiring musicians.

He made the final round of the songwriting competition, and Matthew was offered a songwriting deal. Between that time and his own career as a singer/songwriter, he wrote songs for artists such as Rascal Flatts and Natalie Grant

He finally signed with Universal South Records and his first single, More, kept the number 1 spot in Christian adult contemporary charts for nine weeks.

It seemed as if he was going to shoot to the top of Christian music with his next album, History with 2 more hit singles, but in 2007 it all came to a screeching halt when during a vocal check-up West’s doctors discovered hemorrhaging caused by some polyps. He was told by his doctors that vocal surgery was the only option, since a few weeks had passed. The surgery took place on May 17, 2007, a process that he said was “career threatening.” He was on the verge of losing his voice and was instructed to undergo vocal rest for two months after the surgery by not talking at all. His music career could have ended there, but thankfully God wasn’t ready for him to be finished.

Matthew returned in 2008 with Something to Say which contained the lead single, You Are Everything, which was the most-played song on Christian radio that year.

Since then he has had so many hits and they keep coming with last year’s amazing song, Broken Things, my other favorite song of his.

You can hear the story behind Broken Things here,

I often turn this way up in the car when I hear it on my way to or from work, and sing it loud…

This is an open thread, but I hope you guys can find some favorite Matthew West songs and post them for us to enjoy today. Have a beautiful and blessed Saturday all!
