I’ve always loved old movies and music, because actors and musicians back in the ‘old days’ had more of a Patriotic spirit even when times were hard. There have been many hard times in our country, yet the country and her people always got through because they had a spirit of goodness, love and pride and they remembered God through all times. I don’t know why, but whenever I hear the song God Bless America, or others from older times, I get teary eyed.
Whether it’s from gratitude for living here, for those who have fought and fight for her, or just because I hope for things to be better, I don’t know, but whenever I hear these songs, I know that until I go home to where Jesus is, I’m in the place where I belong.
Back in the late 1930’s and early 40s, American families sat around their radios to listen to their favorite entertainers and shows. Popular songwriter Irving Berlin had lived through one world war, and knew that America would be soon entering another war as well. Hitler was marching across Europe and other nations were already feeling the effects. As America was still suffering too from the Depression, he wanted to write a song to show hope and peace for America.
After a few times of trying to write something different, he went back to a song he’d written during his time in the Army when he’d been stationed in Yaphank, New York. At the time so many patriotic songs were coming out, he wanted something unique. The song had been put away and long forgotten. He re worked the song, changing a couple of parts and went on a search for the right person to sing it.
Kate Smith, one of the most popular stars of the time was just the right voice to bring the song to the American people. She had been a vaudeville singer who’d entertained WWI troops when she was 8 years old and gone on to host her own extremely popular radio show. On Nov. 11, 1938, Smith sang “God Bless America” as part of her Armistice Day broadcast.
The song was an instant hit, and seemed to inspire a wave of patriotism as if it were a new national anthem. Berlin established a trust because to him it didn’t seem right to earn money on a patriotic song. The God Bless America Fund has distributed more than 10 million dollars over the years to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.
While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free, Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.
God Bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam God bless America, My home sweet home…
America needs to bless God, and please God bless all our Troops and Veterans.
I hope everyone has a blessed day.
