The past few days we’ve looked at the nature of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as a refresher and also for people to understand a little more of Who Jesus is. This being Passion week for Christians, it’s helpful to know Jesus and why we hold the time between Good Friday and Resurrection morning so dear.
What though, was the reason (humanly speaking) for the death of Jesus? While the Scriptures, both in Old and New Testaments describe the real reason of Jesus’s sacrifice, to take the sins of the world upon Himself, to defeat sin and death, and to reconcile all who would trust in Him to God- it was the deeds and the hearts of all men who put Him on the cross.
It wasn’t just because Jesus was some rabble rousing revolutionary, although He was that to an extent- but it was, besides taking attention away from religious leaders who craved it, his claiming to be God which sealed His fate among the leaders.
This is what separates Christ and Christianity from any other major belief- what separates Christianity from Judaism, and Islam and even from other organizations such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons. While Judaism and Islam believe in one God, it Jesus’ claim which both to this day abhor and deny, that which JW and Mormons deny and which all condemn traditional Christianity as a false and blasphemous religion.
Many don’t believe Jesus claimed to be God, but they don’t consider the many times the Pharisees and others were ready to stone Him for claiming just that.
For this look at Jesus, we look to the Word, and do a Scripture comparison, which the religious leaders of the time knew full well what Jesus was claiming.
In the following Scriptures, the characteristics attributed to Jesus either by His own claims or by the authors will be listed first, and those attributed to God are underneath in bold:
