In the Spotlight

Well today’s spotlight shines on a band I’ve liked for a number of years.  Like so many others, much of their music is real life, struggles and trying to grow in our faith walks.  To trust in God even when we don’t understand or know where He’s leading us.

Tenth Avenue North consists of  lead singer/guitarist Mike Donehey , guitarist Jeff Owen, bass, keyboard & back vocalist Ruben Juarez III and keyboard player Brendon Shirley.  The band was formed while members attended Palm Beach Atlantic University, and are from Palm Beach, Florida. Their band name comes from a major east/west road in Palm Beach County.

The band has been around since the early 2000’s and they’ve had a successful run since their first major label debut album Over and Underneath‘s single Love is Here hit the number 3 spot on Billboard’s Christian charts in June 2008. It held the spot for 13 weeks and by the end of 2008, the song was the 12th most played song of the year.

The band’s next single, one of my long time favorites, By Your Side, was released in late August 2008 and eventually reached No. 1 on Christian CHR radio in 2009.  They won the Gospel Music Association Dove Award in 2009 for New Artist of the Year and in 2010 By Your Side was named Song of the Year.

The Struggle was released in 2012 which continued success on the billboard charts with  the great songs, Healing Begins, You Are More, and another favorite of mine, Worn.

Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn

I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
‘Cause I’m worn

Two more of their great albums were released in 2014 (their 4th studio) Cathedrals, and Followers in 2016.  You can read more of the members’ thoughts on their career and music, especially from Cathedrals here.

Followers included one song  a lot of folks here seem to like, including me…

God You don’t need me
But somehow You want me
Oh, how You love me
Somehow that frees me
To take my hands off of my life
And the way it should go

There are so many great songs by this band, I could post a bunch- but I’ll leave it to y’all to find your favorites and share them.  Have a blessed Sunday!
