If there’s one constant when it comes to Christmas and our troops, it’s got to be the USO. And who more than Bob Hope is remembered for so many dedicated years of serving those who serve, by going to give deployed troops a little taste of Home for the Holidays.
From Vietnam in 1966
to Beruit in the 80’s not too long after a bomb killed over 200 Marines, this show was a blessing for so many of the service men and women who were there.
And still aboard the USS Midway in the Persian Gulf in 1987
Well, we’re not the USO or even have many ways to entertain or encourage our troops at this time of year, but our Troops and Vets are important parts of our Heartbeat, especially our MG and Snake.
For as long as I’ve known MG, he’s been gone at Christmas as much as he’s been home, and it never gets easier to know he’s not home again for the holiday. I can’t imagine how hard it is for our troops their families, but that’s a part of who they are.
I can’t help but miss them so much whenever they’re gone, but most of all at Christmas time.
I know this is an old one, but I post it still because the words are as fresh as they were when I first wrote it a few years ago. And our old friend Wolfie made it into a photo form, so,
God, thank You for giving us Your Son, for His gift to the world through Your love. Thank You for our troops, who in some ways display Your love and sacrifice more than many who are called Christian. Please watch over them, and let Your presence be felt at Christmas and every day wherever they are. Thank You.
Be safe. Have a blessed day all, and hope you’ve got your RED on.
