A little background, Scott was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to country music artist Linda Davis and Lang Scott, a musician and entrepreneur.
She was homeschooled on the road for kindergarten, and then she attended a K-12 Christian school where she graduated in 2004. She lived with her grandparents during that time while her parents were on the road touring. After joining her mom on stage for a Christmas show, she knew she wanted to become a country singer.
During college, she sang and worked on her music, but the big ‘break’ came when she met Charles Kelly who was living in Nashville with his pop singer brother Josh, and writing music with him. Kelly and Scott wrote their first song together, All We’d Ever Need which was originally written for her to perform. Hillary convinced Charles it should be a duet, which led to the forming of Lady Antebellum. The group first performed together in August 2006 and signed a record deal with Capitol Nashville in 2007.
Their self-titled debut album was released on April 15, 2008, and debuted at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. It consisted of eleven songs, ten of which were either written or co-written by the members of the band which included back up singer Dave Heywood. In 2009 the band released the lead single of the album, Need You Now, and the song topped the Hot Country Songs chart for five weeks in late 2009 before peaking at No. 1 and No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary and Hot 100 charts, respectively, in early 2010. It also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart with first-week sales of almost 481,000 copies.
Between then and late 2015 the band produced more hits, and numerous albums before slowing things down a bit from tours.
On April 22, 2016, Hillary posted a handwritten note online about a new project and album called Love Remains by “Hillary Scott & the Scott Family”. On why making a gospel album she explained, “Well, I wanted to make this album to share more of who I am. These songs, and many like them are the cry of my heart. I have been singing songs like this my whole my life whether it be in church, with family and friends gathered around with guitars on my screened porch, rocking my baby girl to sleep or while holding the hand of a dying loved one.” It features her parents Linda Davis and Lang Scott, and her little sister Rylee. The lead single “Thy Will” was released on April 22, 2016.
“The idea of this album was really when my dad had sat me down right at the beginning of last year to talk about something that he felt in his heart that he wanted to do – which was make a collection of songs to send out to some really dear friends and family…it was all around my grandfather’s diagnosis, battle, from cancer,” Hillary explained in an interview.
After taking time to pray and think and talk to her husband, Chris Tyrell, Hillary realized there was an opportunity to bring more depth and impact to the project so that it helped more people. So, they decided to expand her dad’s initial idea into an album for family, friends, and fans; old and new.
“These are the songs that are talking about the source of where my peace comes from. So, whenever you listen to it I hope you hear the parts of my heart that are bursting with joy and thankfulness but also the pieces of my heart that are broken.”
This is a beautiful song, featuring Hillary’s Mom Linda, her sister Rylee and Dad, Lang singing…
The album is a mix of original material and gospel favorites. Scott penned the newer material with her family. Love Remains won Best Contemporary Christian Album and “Thy Will” won Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.
In this goofy video, Matthew West wanted to give Hillary some sage advice about crossing over into Christian music… they both eventually got a little help from someone a little more seasoned…
Keep your eyes on the road Matthew!
I hope you all find some other songs by Hillary that you enjoy! Share whatever you feel like sharing. Have a beautiful and blessed Sunday all!
